The Market Inn story
Historical roots
The Market Inn has a rich history dating back to 1860, when it was originally known as the Cattle Market Inn. Built by the Bedford Estate shortly after the local cattle market relocated, it has been a cornerstone of Tavistock's community for more than 150 years.
Located at the junction of Whitchurch Road and Pixon Lane, the three-storey building was briefly known as the Mariner Inn before becoming the Market Inn we know today. A date stone with a ducal crown still adorns the building.
Early tenants
The inn's first tenant was Caroline Luke, a widow who took over in the 1860s after previously running the Plymouth Inn. Over the decades, notable local families, including the Brook family, brought their own character to the hostelry.
From Hannah Brook managing the inn with her children to Alice Gidley navigating the challenging early 1900s, each generation helped to shape this much-loved local landmark.
A community hub
Today, we are still a place for locals and visitors alike. Our historic, stone-built building brings together a lively public bar, cosy lounge and dining area, real wood fire, sunny terrace and a dog-friendly welcome.
